My condolences to the family & friends of Benjamin Flores. I didn't know him that well but he seemed to be soft spoken, respectful and a nice guy. My prayers are with Benjamin..

Ben passed away early this morning.
The entire Houston boxing community is in tremendous pain right now. Benjamin was a staple locally, a prominent local amateur, rising on the local club circuit and a sparring partner for everyone from bantam to super feather. He and Rocky sparred for many years and have probably accumulated 100s of rounds together in the ring.
Benjamin Flores was the type of fighter we as pure fans are drawn towards. He was usually the guy with lesser speed and strength in a match, but never outworked. He almost always lost the first round, but almost never lost the final round. He was a grinder who at some point in every fight would pass his foe and take over the advantage. He was the epitome of a boxer who excelled thru hard work. He was a 132lb amateur, who was usually outsized at featherweight as a pro. When he eventually made it down to 118 is when he finally got close to an even par with his opponents. And he did all of this thru dedication and dutifully following his trainers instructions.
As an amateur he was denied the chance to fight in usaboxing tournaments because of his residency. Yet, thru all of this, being an underdog, always going against the odds, Benji always had a smile to greet you. He was a smart soft spoken person whom nobody every had a bad word about and people genuinely liked.
In my five plus years of attending boxing in Houston, I've gotten to witness Ben's progression and today there is a very big void in our community.
R.I.P. Benjamin Flores 1984-05-24 - 2009-05-05

I would like to offer my prayers to Benjamins family and the entire boxing community. I knew Benjamin through my brother, Chris Tamayo, with whom he sparred with countless times going back to when they were teenagers. It is a great loss to the boxing community. He was great fighter and even greater person. May he rest in peace.

From: northtexasboxing.com/Real Estate Council Establishes Benjamin Flores Memorial Fund (By Ex Alba) North Texas Boxing is touched by the numerous requests offering assistance to the Flores family. Even though there are insurance policies in place for tragedies such as this, there are still numerous miscellaneous expenditures that need to be addressed. North Texas Boxing in conversation with the Flores family over the last few days is impressed with all The Real Estate Council is doing for the Flores family, and apparently their generosity knows no bounds, they have established a memorial fund: Benjamin Flores Memorial Fund Attn: Sabrina Jaramillo Guaranty Bank 2nd Floor - TMSS 8333 Douglas Ave. Dallas, TX 75225 Those of us in Benjamin Flores’ boxing family need to step up as well; any contribution of any size is needed and would be greatly appreciated by the family. Other unsung heroes have surfaced since this tragedy; one in particular that has touched the family is the local restaurant Grandpa Tony’s and their willingness to “take care” of the family while they were here. We applaud them as well. Now it is up to the rest of us to do our part.
